We are proud to welcome Carl Atik to Shiru in the role of Associate Engineer
Shiru’s mission is to feed people sustainably by leveraging machine learning and precision biology to identify and create ideal food proteins. Carl has made an exceptionally fast start in helping us on our way with this mission.
During his studies in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at UC Berkeley, Carl interned at Shiru and personally drove the process development for an interesting ‘side-project’ that spun out of our R&D ideation process. Well, a side-project quickly became what promises to be a headline game-changing solution for the plant-based food industry thanks to the excellent work of Carl. More news of this discovery later, but the immediate result is a brilliant new Shiru Associate Engineer who just graduated.
Carl is eager to further develop his specialism in Bioprocess Engineering with an emphasis in food science and alternative food systems — a career path that we are eager to develop at Shiru. We are passionate about recruiting and developing talent at all levels, from graduates to experienced industry professionals.

When Carl is not troubleshooting complex downstream processing systems he enjoys troubleshooting complex food systems at home as a homebrewer, baker, and lover of off-the-cuff cooking! Carl also enjoys hiking, gardening, and most recently attempting to learn guitar! As he would put it, “my hobby is learning how to do new hobbies”.
